Here There :)

WOW!! Its been forever since I have made a decent post. Its shocking :( Life has been so busy for me lately with lots of new and exciting projects that I've been involved in. The most recent, being my involvement in the realm of Non-Profit Organisations. The organisation I am currently volunteering at and in the process of raising funds for is Seasons Crisis Pregnancy Centre. Along with that I have been carrying on with my studies and will be graduating soon with my honors in psychology specializing in trauma counselling and play therapy :) Which I'm really excited about. Been a long and busy road with my studies with a fair share of set backs but in the end I realized that its all been worth it and my skills and knowledge have tripled making me both a better counselor and person.

I'm definitely going to be more active and get back into blogging. Please send me any topics that you would like me to write about.

How to pick yourself back up after an unexpected setback

As the lyrics from the song Collide by Howie day, "even the best fall down sometimes". As someone who rarely fails and always manages to achieve her goals I have recently suffered a setback. But more than that its the humiliation and the embarrassment that is haunting me the most. I am someone who has a tendency to beat myself up about things that don't work out. So, I'm trying my best to keep my head up and move on swiftly and placing things in order so that I can quickly fill up the void left by my failure.

Here are a few things that I am implementing to get me through this setback:

1.) ACTION: When I realized what had happened I quickly started to make inquires about what was to happen next. As well as this I also started looking into new opportunities.

2.) CRY: A good cry is sometimes a must, but don't dwell. Let yourself be sad and disappointed or whatever the feeing may be but get back up again. Hold that head high and put your thinking cap on.

3.) MUSIC: Music is something that can really have a profound effect on your mood and state of mind. So choose music that keeps your spirits up or that inspires you.

4.) ME TIME: Take a break from those around you. Regroup, take a bit of time to lick your wounds and be tender with yourself. Don't sit and wallow but acknowledge your feelings and get yourself a bit of a break, treat yourself like you would your best friend.

5.) PLAN: Start a plan of action. Evaluate the situation, the damage and your options and alternative routes. Write it all down and start moving in a new direction. Research, make phone calls and send emails to those who you think could possible open new doors for you.

Getting to know you

With recent events in my life, things have been a bit rough for me. That saying, "what doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger" is rather a frustrating concept for me right now because I'm not dead yet but I sure am tired of "getting stronger". But on the up side of these down times one comes to many realization and one of them that has occurred to me is the fact that I need to be more decisive and firm in the small things that make up the me that I present to the world. My tiny quirks, likes, dislikes, values, morals and opinions. Values and morals for the most part I have never had a problem with, there are simply things that I don't waver on in my own quiet way but I think that I maybe need to define the simpler, more fun and frivolous things about myself and cement them into who I am a bit more :)

So, here are a few frivolous bits of know how about me :)

I am a strictly chocolate girl, no vanilla, no strawberry
When it comes to really jewelry I will only buy and wear silver or white gold (which looks exactly like silver?!) not gold, but when it comes to general costume jewelry and accessories I will add a splash of gold
I love interesting and funky clothes, shoes, and handbags, things that are out of the ordinary, even if its simply the fact that there is patterned material inside the shoe.
I like to learn, (what a nerd), not necessarily study, but to learn about new things
One thing that I have learnt about myself recently, and I do realize this sounds very self congratulatory, is the fact that I can do all those things that I doubt about my self. I recently tried out a new job in something that is so opposite of my personality that all my friends where shocked but I had the greatest time and I held my own and it was something I never though I could do but I did it. And so having survived that I now know that there are few things I cannot do successfully.
I've recently discovered that I am in fact a big fan of my lips and they are fast becoming my new favorite feature :)
Whilst I am somewhat of a shy person I do love to meet new people and makes friends in my own way
I don't define myself by a "relationship status" I'm not single or in a relationship, what counts in whether or not you have a special person in your life to talk to and share time with and that can't be labeled, boxed or be given a "status"
I am strictly a cat person, dogs aren't bad but cats are better!
Just because I don't say everything I think or prefer to sit back and observe a situation does not mean that there isn't a lot going on in my head, I just don't always feel compelled to blurt everything out all the time
I'm a total techno nerd, I wanted to study web design and IT
I love to travel but I don't want to do it alone anymore, the next trip I take has to involve someone else
I love music but can never remember the names of songs or artists
I'm a morning person but I can be night person too but in order to stay awake I need to stay busy and watching movies late at night puts me to sleep
I am unfortunately I big quantity over quality person, something I am really trying to curb
I love to read but don't get too much time for it any more :(
I am an organisation and planning freak but only about certain areas of my life
I love food and eating and all things sweet
I need to learn to alter my own perception of myself and see myself as the 24yr old professional that I am instead of an 18year old teenager and treat myself accordingly

So there are a few tidbits about myself :) Are there any things about yourself that you have recently learned or things that you need to assert about yourself more?

Book Club - Twenties Girl

I would like to start out by saying thank you very much to all my lovely readers for being so patient. I do apologize for being MIA for the past few weeks. Its been a bit of a tough time for me, hopefully the worst is over and things can and will only get better from here on out.

For this months book club I would like to introduce you to the novel that has been keeping me company for the past two weeks.....

Its the latest novel by Sophie Kisella, author of the Shopaholics series, Twenties Girl.

It really is a delightful story of a young women, called Lara, who is haunted by a 23 year old ghost version of her dead great-grandmother that only she can see. Together the two of them embark on a whirlwind of adventures and Lara achieves the impossible by learning a valuable lesson from her dead relative.

I've had a bit of a rough week but to day is a bit of a better say and I'm really trying to pick myself back up again. If only every time life hands you lemons you could pack a bag and fly off to somewhere great and have an amazing holiday from your life for a week, wouldn't it be great if that was the way that life worked...... :) I really wish I could come and visit you guys all around the world an meet everyone in person, wouldn't that be great! Maybe one day when I win the lotto, hehe.

I've had a little bit of a personal set back of late that has me really confused and upset and questioning a lot of things. I'm really at a bit of a loss right now as to where I should be going to from here. I'm ask all you lovely ladies out there to give me a bit of advice right now on how to put myself back together.

I am crazy busy with studies at the moment and all of my assignments are due by the end of next month and I have 6 to do!!!! All of them essay assignments and research projects, sigh.

So, my mind is mostly in the books for the moment and here are a few tips and tricks for those busy study periods:

- make sure you have enough space, a large table where you can stretch out and makes piles is my preference
- have good internet access for research and possible queries that come up as you go
- make sure you have access to a printer so you can easily have access to copies of important documents
- colour code your files and make sure everything has their own space to keep subject separate
- file away as you go so you don't end up with a big old pile of random papers
- make sure you have enough pens and paper as well as staples, glue, ect whatever you need

I have a few interesting projects of my own going on at the moment that I'm hoping to get off the ground soon in between the madness so hopefully I will be sharing them all with you soon!!

1.) A Little Pain Never Hurt Anybody

The moment I stop fearing and resisting it, the pain changes. It becomes smaller, more manageable and docile.

2.) Sunscreen is for necks and chest, not just faces

I remind myself daily that its never too late to apply a protective layer of integrity to parts of my life I've ignored.

3.) Television is a vitamin

Toxic if taken in large quantities, but also essential for social and personal well-being.

4.) It is good to be wrong

Being open to new info and opinions, inviting people and events to let you know where you're going wrong, is the best way to open the mind.

5.) You can work miracles

When you are completely exhausted, stop and play. Then go back and to work. Persist and miracles will start happening, all the more wondrous because you worked them yourself.

Winter Wardrobe Quintessential’s

The long sleeve top – this for me a basic that one can't get by without, excellent for layering or wearing alone they come in various lengths as well as prints. Various necklines are also available as well as the handy ¾ sleeve which I quite like at times, especially while I am studying.
The basic jersey – this is typically a v-neck sweater with long sleeves in a plain colour and a simple texture. However, the round and square neck jersey can also be included in this category. This item is easy to throw on and layer with a lacy cami or contrasting colour for a warm put together look that is simple and elegant.
The coat – whether a swing jacket hitting you at the hips or a full on trench this is a "cannot do without" item. Everyone needs a coat of some form to ward against the wind, rain or snow. There is a lot of room to play here and you can get ones in varying lengths, colours, materials, and prints.
The scarf – I am a hug fan of scarves and they are definitely a winter do as they keep you nice and toasty. Again, there are so many options in terms of colour, texture, thickness, length and print there is something for every taste and style.
The boot – whether ankle, knee length or thigh high, a pair of boots will stand you in good stead for the winter months. This is especially true for me as it rains often here and as well as keeping my feet dry they also keep my jeans or pants dry too.
The skinny/straight leg jeans – I personally am a fan of the straight leg jean for all seasons but in winter when you tucking jeans into boots they can be quite useful. Skinny jeans as well as jeggings are also very useful for this; just remember to bank out the narrow silhouette with volume and length on top.
The knit dress – this is a very useful item to own as it can be dressed down or up for evening occasions in winter. It creates variety in a winter wardrobe and lets you navigate away from the usually jeans or pants option whilst still keeping you warm.
Stockings – these allow for summer/winter wardrobe interchange as summer items instantly become winter wearable with the addition of stockings. Again, variety, variety, variety, you can really have a lot of fun with texture and colour.

June Baby

As a June Baby there are ups and downs, one up being that I get presents every six months or so, hehe, a downside is that it is in the winter holidays so everyone usually goes on holiday and so no one is around to celebrate with me :(

For the month of June this is what I plan to accomplish:

Get my research project done and dusted
This my very first research article I have ever done and it is very daunting! SO much to do and next to no time to do it in!!!

Have an amazing birthday
As I mentioned above not many people are around when it comes to my birthday and it usually upsets me quite a bit and I while I love organizing something for my birthday everyone ends up cancelling on me :( So this year I have planned my own day with the one or two people in my life who mean I know will be there regardless :)

Find a new job
There are days when I enjoy my job and quite a few where I hate it but the fear of not finding a new one holds me back from quiting and of course the fact that I need money for food ect, haha. So, this month I am seriously going to hunt around for something better. I don't mind having large amounts of responsibility if I am paid accordingly.....

Get all my applications in order for next year
I barely started the year and I was stressing about what I was going to do next year and I'm still stressing. I have decided to send out all my applications ASAP and see what comes of it. Then I can make a decision based on what I get accepted for, a much more realistic situation to deal with.

Professional Makeup Tips

Here are a few professional make up tips I picked up recently when I was a model for a makeup course:

do your eye makeup first to avoid spillage of the colour onto your foundation area under the eye
for a flawless eye shadow application that lasts all day apply a reasonable amount of foundation to the lid from lash line to brow, using a brush so that the area is the same colour as the rest of your face covering all the veins ect
using your ring finger press the product into the skin to attain a smooth finish
always remember to start right at the lash line and to use your brush to ensure this
then take an eye shadow brush and apply translucent powder to set the foundation, do not wait too long to do that otherwise the foundation will set and the powder will sit awkwardly on top of the product
again use your ring finger to tap the eyelid ensure a natural look
next apply your eye shadow colour in contouring motions over the eyelid from lash line to below the brow bone making sure to apply the colour right at the lash line
lastly, take your highlighting colour and sweep over the brow bone making sure to blend slightly with the eyelid colour to ensure a seamless finish
finish the eyes with mascara making sure to wiggle the brush through the lashes
to apply blush, find the beginning of your cheek bone and apply along the bone to the hairline and up to the temple almost like a "nike" tick shape
make sure that the blush is blended well and doesn't look like a strip of colour, it might be a good idea to take the blush brush dust it off and make circular motions over the applied blush area to ensure that it is blended well and looks natural

Dealing with a crisis

We have all been in the situation where a friend calls us up in tears and asks for our help. Whether it be that they broke up with their boyfriend or their parents are getting divorced to they are being retrenched, its a situation we know well.

What do you do, what do you say? How do you help them deal with the crisis. We all want to say and the right thing and solve the problem but sometimes it not that easy.

The anatomy of a crisis:
Stage one is the Pre-crisis stage
- the person is living their life as per usual and is dealing with problems effectively.

Stage two is the crisis stage
- an event or a set of circumstances has arisen which presents its self as a crisis for the person and they are in a dark place in their life.

It is here that is important to have a brief awareness of the 6 phases of the crisis cycle. The reason for this is so that you can identify where your friend is in the cycle and effectively help them at the point at which they are at.

The Crisis Cycle:
1.) Denial - This can't be happening
2.) Bargaining - Maybe if I do this then....
3.) Anger - Its his fault!

4.) Depression - It is extremely important to differential here between SITUATIONAL depression and CLINICAL depression. As someone helping a friend through a crisis we CANNOT deal with clinical depression. There is a huge and notable difference!

5.) Acceptance - Its happened, I can't change it
6.) Resolution - Moving on with my life

Stage 3 is the Post-Crisis stage
- The crisis has been resolved and one of three things could result. The person has an increased coping ability, the same level of ability or a lowered level of ability.

Always remember that despite the situation the person in crisis has strengths and theses should be highlighted before leaving that persons side so that they see a glimmer of hope and and use those strengths to propose a plan of action. Also, always remember to let that person vent and get rid of their feelings.

Spoilt Brat

Hello to all you lovely readers,

I do apologize for my lengthy break in posts and my generally sporadic postings these past few months, life in general has been pretty crazy. As for the this recent break - firstly my silly internet provider cut me off and secondly I was whisked away for weekend of luxury :)

I stayed on a Golf course in George which is on the picturesque garden route in 3 bedroom house with underfloor heating :). I got spoilt with Lindt chocolate, jacuzzi, private golf cart, the most beautiful golf course in South Africa and an evening at the spa!

Now its back to the real world and a lot of things to get done!

The Best Possible Taste

Sam O‘Reilly‘s novel ‘The Best Possible Taste‘ is centred around main character Stephen Beckett: the 41 year-old owner of the chic organic restaurant ‘Earthsea‘ on the shore of Brighton and happily married father of two children.

But wait - no!

We soon have to learn that Stephen‘s project with his best friend Vinny is not quite as successful as visitor numbers would make one believe.

None of the two are business men or too keen on accounting, which is why bills are rarely getting paid and expenses are not kept in check. Vinny and Stephen rather spend their time in the kitchen, dealing with their customers‘ orders and creating ever new dishes.

It‘s exactly that obsession, stemming from the utter distaste for his mother‘s non-existent cooking skills, which is wrecking Stephen‘s marriage.

Rachel, his wife, is not willing to let Stephen‘s mistakes and ignorance towards her feelings and their kids well-being slide again and thus, on the evening of their wedding anniversary, Stephen finds himself thrown out of his own house.

From then on, things start spiralling downwards for him until he hits rock bottom:

Stephen has to realise that there is neither a chance for Vinny and him to save ,Earthsea‘ nor to stop his marriage from falling apart. He gets so caught up in his own disaster that he barely notices what is going on around him.

Stephen panics about losing his children to another father figure when his wife suddenly turns up with, supposedly, a new boyfriend. His efforts to save the restaurant are being rudely sabotaged by his business partner‘s mean, cheating partner.

And what happens when Stephen himself feels interest in other women stir inside of him?

While all of the above sounds quite tragic, Sam O‘Reilly manages to tell a story that will equally tug on your heartstrings as well as make you laugh out loud and smile. There are also moments when you will find yourself utterly surprised as a lot of the small details eventually add up to the bigger picture, making this a well-thoughtout novel.

I think the author captures Stephen‘s voice perfectly without painting a stereotypical picture of your usual male character. In fact, all characters are original and have their own unique quirks, starting from the Beckett children to the stripper Stephen gets involved with.

Also, I love that the likelihood of a story happening just like that is quite high: After all, the story is set in present time Brighton, a truly lovely place, and the subject, a married couple splitting up, is an everyday occurrence.

While this is a book from a genre that I usually do not enjoy reading too much, I found myself thoroughly entertained by Stephen‘s story. Working as a part-timer at a restaurant myself, I could actually feel his pain that comes with running a food business. And who hasn‘t been through a bad break-up?

All in all, ‘The Best Possible Taste‘ is a lovely read; it‘s one of those books full of quotes you want to note down and remember when ever life throws you lemons!

How To Tackle A Major Wardrobe Makeover - Part Two

In my own wardrobe makeover I have discovered the following things:

I have out grown my current wardrobe (figuratively)
My taste in clothes have changed
My needs are different
My life is a lot more multi-purpose

After looking through my own sources of inspiration, a large amount which actually came from observing the clients I deal with on a day to day basis at the boutique I work at, and noting what I am drawn to I realized that my wardrobe does in no way reflect my shift in taste. It is sorely lacking in the pieces that I love and that in order to feel more like dressing up and looking fabulous everyday I need to be inspired and coaxed by every item in closet.

PLAN OF ACTION

My aim: To foster a wardrobe full of unique, quirky and inspirational pieces that can be mixed and matched to allow for a fabulous look everyday.

Goal: To purge my closet of any item which I do not love and buy only items that are special and that I am in love with otherwise its not worth my time and money.

Realistically, I cannot throw out 90% of my wardrobe at this point otherwise I will be left with nothing to wear thus, I am making four piles: love, like, get rid of and tailor.

Love - is obviously the gems that I am crazy about and make me feel fabulous
Like - are pieces that I wear often and that I need to a certain degree but that do not make me feel amazing but will discard as I replace them
Get rid of - pieces that I don't wear or do not like what so ever
Tailor - pieces that you need to have adjusted in order to wear them

I have already started the purchasing process and got myself a few one of a kind items that I am crazy about and know I will wear all the time. While a few were pricey the cost per wear and the knowledge that with these garments I am prepared for any occasion never having to face the "I have nothing to wear" situation made them worth every cent.

I already have a general idea of the clothes I am going to purge, it always a good idea to be aware of the different areas in your life and sort everything accordingly. Eg, work, casual, formal, sporty ect. If you have a job where you need old clothes to get dirty in or a job like a dance/yoga teacher where you need comfortable clothes this all needs to be taken into account and you should sort and purge accordingly.

Whilst shopping:

do it with purpose
be picky
try new shops
try new styles, colours and combinations
purchase a few treasured items as opposed to lots of "like" items
look before buying (ask sales people to hold things for you, you can always come back)
always try on before buying

Learning to Love Yourself

I found this really great article on Article Alley and thought I would share it with you.

Have you ever looked at people in your life, or even complete strangers on the street, and wondered why they are always so happy, and what you can do to be happy like them? All of us at one time or another feel the need to be more excited about our lives and more satisfied with ourselves. Happiness starts with appreciating ourselves for who we are, which means you need to take steps to fall in love with yourself, after all who else will love you if you don't love yourself?

1. Start dreaming

Get yourself a big sheet of paper, a pen, some magazines and some scissors and glue. Now sit down and think about your dreams; whether it's to live in a penthouse apartment, or to meet your soul mate and have 2.4 children or just to have a long and relaxing vacation, pluck that dream from your mind's eye and capture it on paper. Cut out pictures from the magazines and use them to create a dream board. Now you can see exactly what it is that you wish for in life and you can take steps to make those dreams come true.

2. Make a map

Have you ever travelled to a new location? A place you had never been before? I'm sure you have at some point in time and I bet you didn't do it without a map or a set of directions. Achieving your dream is the same as reaching that destination, you won't get there until you plan your journey and break it down into small steps that you can accomplish day by day.

3. Live in today

Now that you have captured where you want to be tomorrow, or next year, you need to start living in today. Buy yourself a beautiful journal, something that you will want to write your thoughts in and each and every day write down at least one thing that happened to you. It doesn't matter whether the experience was good or bad, what matters is what you did as a result and how you learned from it. Learning from those experiences will shape the journey towards learning how to love yourself and achieving your dreams.

4. See the best in you

We all have flaws but for most of us that is all we see when we look at ourselves in the mirror. You might think that you're too tall or too short, too fat, or too thin,. But today you need to see the best in you. Stand in front of that mirror and see yourself through the eyes of a stranger; perhaps you have a great hair style, or a pretty smile.

Ask your closest friends and family what they like about your personality; perhaps you are kind, or funny or the person they always turn to when they need comforting. Write down you five best bits in your journal or diary and reread them each and every day to remind yourself what is good about you.

By capturing your dreams and planning your journey to your destination you will learn more about your innermost thoughts and desires and living into will give you the experience you need to make that dream a reality. Forgetting about your flaws and focusing on your best bits will make you realise how other people see you. Take action with these activities today and you will learn how to love yourself and in turn find the happiness you dream of.

Distance Learning - study tips

For those of you who were not aware, I am completing my current year of studies via distance learning. We have a really awesome University here called UNISA through whom you can do almost any degree you like. While, in my opinion, it takes a certain type of temperament for distance learning anyone can do it as long as you are dedicated and have a lot of self-discipline.

Theses are tips and tricks that I use in everyday studies:

make use of a month view calendar to jot down assignments as there is no one to remind you
assign each subject a specific colour, this way assignments and test noted on your calender are easy to identify
submit small assignments first and early that way you won't forget and can spend all your time doing longer ones
make sure to get all your textbooks as there are not lecture notes or people to borrow from
where possible submit all assignments online, post has been known to disappear or not arrive on time
have regular contact with your department and its lecturers as their input and assistance can be invaluable
always double check due dates, test and exam dates and venues as they can change without you realizing
study regularly otherwise you are going to find yourself regularly pulling all nighters
make sure to request any books, articles or journals well in advance
always keep a printed and an electronic copy of your work for resubmission should there be a problem
form a study group with others in your area and discuss common difficulties
set yourself a structured study time with a particular subject and an end goal in mind

Book Club - Guest Review of The Time Traveler's Wife

This months book club review is by the lovely Luinae of More Magic Always

Overall Review: 4.5/5

The Time Traveller’s Wife is a beautiful and romantic love story that spans the years, pushes boundaries, and tests the foundations of love. It is complicated at first, but soon becomes so hard to put down, as it takes you on a rollercoaster ride of one couples love.

I believe one of the reasons I enjoyed this book so much is because it is such a unique and entertaining idea. Henry first meets Clare when she is 20, but Clare has known Henry since she was 6. This is possible because Henry is a time traveller, but instead of the bright lights/Hollywood/spacesuit time travel, Henry is instead pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his past, present, and future.

This book also questioned a lot of morals. This is because when Henry time travels, he appears naked and without anything on his person. It questions things like: “Is it o.k to steal?” and that facet of the book made it very interesting.

At first, when reading, the book seems very complicated. However, once you finally get into the groove of how the time travelling works, it actually becomes very straightforward. Luckily, the author puts both the age of Henry and Clare, as well as their ages, at the beginning of each chapter.

I won’t spoil the ending for you, but don’t be surprised if the library copy is tear stained ar the end. I cried so much when I read the end; it was incredibly hard for me to read. The reason I’m not giving it 5/5 is because I felt like it described too much of the intimate relations between Henry and Clare (read: sex) and I wasn’t very comfortable with it. However, I am only 14! So if you were older, you probably wouldn’t even notice it at all.

How To Tackle A Major Wardrobe Makeover - Part One

A lot of my wardrobe over the years has been supplied by my mother over the years and since she was never taught the art of compiling a wardrobe, bless her, shopping was always a haphazard affair of randomly bought pieces that never quite fit together. As I got older I always craved a well put together wardrobe and look but didn't know how to go about it. Since discovering the world of blogging last year I tapped in to a world of amazing knowledge and ideas which has fueled my wardrobe revolution.

As of yet I have made small gradual changes and at this point feel that while I have definitely made progress there is still much to be desired. I am now in a more independent place money, taste and lifestyle wise where i can take control of my wardrobe and not be overshadowed by my families tastes and monetary constraints.

Thus I have come up with my own plan to create the ultimate wardrobe:

REFLECTION

Theses are the three steps that I am taking on my wardrobe revolution journey :)

Firstly, and most importantly is INSPIRATION and it is everywhere!

Places to find it:
- people watching: I work in a charming little boutique and as a result I get to see a lot of different tastes and styles which I love. Its a constant stream of inspiration. It also helps me to define my own aesthetic because when I look at what overs are wearing more importantly HOW they are wearing it I always find myself thinking either that I love that or thats new and interesting or I hate that. So, go for coffee or lunch somewhere there is a lot of people traffic and watch them go by, if you are really studious take a notebook and jot down ideas or even more adventurous, your camera and take a few snap shots.

- magazines: I used to buy loads and loads but know I buy two each month that i read cover to cover and that have fun and interesting fashion spreads in them. I'm always cutting out pics of clothes I like and more specifically looks that I like and I pinpoint the elements of the look that I love and how I could recreate the look and feel.

- blogs and websites: there is a wealth of info out there on creating your perfect wardrobe. I think that each person mode of attach has some good points and so for me when I read those articles I take out certain elements that make sense to me and I use them. That way I find a unique method tailored to my needs. There are also a lot of bloggers who do outfit posts as well as runway looks which are all great places to look.

- celebrities: I love to look to celebrities for inspiration. They often sport what I call a "complete look" and this always helps me to draw my outfit, hair, make up and jewelry together. Also, celebrities are always spotted in various looks from casual to red carpet which is also helpful.

Long Distance Relationships

I have been in a long distance relationship with my boyfriend for more years than I can count! I won't sugar-coat it for you - it's not easy, and there may be times where you just want to call it quits. I wouldn't advise you to get yourself into this situation unless there's absolutely no viable alternative; and you shouldn't even consider it if your relationship is still quite young! Distance will break apart relationships that weren't meant to last, but will have the opposite effect on partners that should definitely be together (ever heard the phrase, "Absence makes the heart grow fonder?")

If you do decide to take the plunge, here are my tips for enduring the distance:

Talk to each other every day. It might be hard, but you should touch base with each other at least once a day, even if it's only for a few minutes. If you really, really don't have time, or if the time difference is too awkward, at least send each other an e-mail every day. It can be just a quick one: the point of this is to make sure you are in each other's thoughts, even when you're not physically together. Skype is an amazing way to stay in touch - I don't know what I'd do without it!
Go on a date, once a week. Yes, I know you can't both get into the same car and drive to a movie, but you can still do things together! Here is a great list of things you can do together from a distance. Even if your date means chatting to each other online, the key is that you are spending time together. In some ways, long distance relationships can make you closer, because you are forced to talk to each other much more than you may be used to.
Try to see each other as often as possible. It might be once a year; it might be once a month: see each other as often as time/budget permits.
Trust your partner. Jealousy may arise during long separations, but trust is essential to maintaining your relationship. If you develop feelings for someone else, don't hide them. Discuss it with your partner. Sometimes it may just be a case of displacing emotions for your loved one onto someone who is nearby, and your partner may be feeling the same way. If you can identify this, you can stop yourself from making a mistake.

Guest Post for the Valentines Day Blog Carnival by Vanessa of Chicken Soup for the Dorky Soul

I have never seen The Notebook. I know some of you are flailing around in confusion at that statement, but it's true. In fact, I never want to see it. There are few things that make me feel more like vomiting than a gooshy, squishy, girly movie. I can't stand when the guy loses the girl and then in a series of crazy antics and emotional ups and downs, he gets her back and they live happily ever after. Or when the guy and the girls are neighbors and one loves the other but the other loves some douche/douchette and the entire movie revolves around how they find out they were meant for each other all along. I really, really hate when a movie shows love as something that happens between some modern-day princess and a white knight who acts all flowery for the sake of making her happy. Chick flicks represent, to me, everything that I've never wanted romance to be. Sure, I like when my boyfriend brings me flowers and writes me love notes, but the moments in which I really know I love him are the ones spent making fun of each other in public and shouting obscenities at each other as we play a violent video games in our pajamas. And sure, I like some romance in my movies, but the totally over-the-top stuff? Not for me.

If you're like me and you don't like the typical chick flick or romantic comedy, you might find yourself a little lost for ideas on what movie to snuggle up with this Valentine's Day—or on any date night, for that matter. Well, fortunately for you, I have a few ideas of movies that incorporate romance just enough to make you go "awww!" and cuddle closer, but not in a way that makes you get sick in the toilet.

Science of Sleep

This is my absolute favorite movie ever. It's the story of a strange dude—aka Gael Garcia Bernal, who is a serious cutie— that comes to live in France and falls in love with his neighbor. He's an inventor and a dreamer—literally. Bernal's character, Stephane, seems to have an odd condition that blurs the line between reality and dream, which leads to tons of interesting, charming interludes in the film. Science of Sleep is wonderfully clever, and is definitely one of those movies you tend to see more than once if you want to savor everything properly (if you're into analyzing movies, this one will keep be a joy to watch). It's perfectly romantic without ever being saccharine.

House of Flying Daggers

This is another one of my favorite films of all time. House of Flying Daggers is a martial arts movie starring the incomparable Ziyi Zhang as Mei, a blind exotic dancer—or so everyone thinks at first. The government believes she has connections to the infamous House of Flying Daggers, so they send two officers after her in order to infiltrate the rebel group. Of course, a sort of love triangle forms, but that's all I'm sharing about the plot. The martial arts amazing, the music is beautiful, and the cinematography is breathtaking. Even if you're not into love stories, this movie is totally worth watching based on its aesthetic value alone.

V for Vendetta

There's nothing like the love between a crazy dude bent on blowing up Parliament and a bald Natalie Portman. I mean, spoiler alert. I mean, she doesn't shave her head and still look drop dead gorgeous. More or less, the plot follows V trying to overthrow a fascist government and his relationship with Evey Hammond, a woman he pulls from the clutches of said fascist government. It's all very tense with lots of explosions and plot twists, and the best part is you're really rooting for this vigilante bent on destruction for the sake of the people. It's hard, of course, not to be distracted by the at-times-subtle romance between V and Evey.

The Princess Bride

I don't think this movie honestly needs much explanation. While the plot essentially revolves around a love story, the film is full of laughs and crazy characters—and not to mention parody. The Princess Bride is, if anything, a satirization of adventures and romances, and you'll be sure to be entertained just thinking about how ridiculous and formulaic the genuine articles are.

Star Wars Movies

And by "Star Wars Movies," I particularly mean the prequels, since we're talking about romance. Yes, yes, I know the prequels get a lot of flack, but I refuse to deny that I found myself cooing girlishly during some of the love scenes between Anakin and Padme. Star Wars is great as a romance because it's definitely not too romantic at all. The sub-plot is there, but mostly there are crazy-looking aliens, badass droids (*cough*Grievous*cough*), and epic lightsaber battles to focus on. I'm sure a lot of you will be skeptical of this choice because of how nerdy it is, but if you give it a watch, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Lesson in love from “The Break-Up”

Guest post for the Valentines Day Blog Carnival by the lovely A of The Glamourous Grad Student.

The Break-Up, with Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, was on TV today. It starts out so cute, with the opening-credits montage of "happy times" photos. Then the relationship implodes so catastrophically it's hard to take it seriously. You want to slap these people with a really big fish...

Brooke: What are these? [holds up a bag with 3 lemons]
Gary: You asked for lemons. What my baby wants my baby gets.
Brooke: There are 3 lemons. I asked for 12. Baby wanted 12.

The chip that becomes a crack that becomes a shattered train-wreck of a relationship is Gary bringing Brooke home insufficient lemons for her centerpiece. This snowballs into a list of complaints about Gary not doing dishes or wearing a belt that matches his pants, and not taking her to the ballet... The fact is, men and women, while equal, are also very, very different. You can't expect your man to be a man, and also have all the same interests, habits and style instincts that you do. Having said that, Gary was an inconsiderate slob at the start of the movie so Brooke did have some pretty legit complaints too.

Lesson? Men ≠ Women. Get used to it.

Gary: Is that how you want to play it Brooke? Because I can play it like that. I can play it like Lionel Richie, "All night long."

Brooke decides the best way to get what she wants is to kick Gary out of their bedroom, get him voted out of their bowling team and beaten up, all with the aim of putting him in a bad place mentally so he'll start thinking about what he's done. That never works!! Naturally, he just starts one-upping her. At this point in the movie you start wondering were either of them really cut out for an adult relationship... The closest they come to any sort of couples counseling is their realtor sitting them down to decide what happens to the condo. When you've been in a relationship long enough to buy property together, the grown-up thing to do is work on it together. "Playing it" any other way is just childish.

Lesson? Mindgames ≠ Mature. Don't go there.

Brooke: I take care of everything. And I just don't feel like you appreciate any of it. I don't feel you appreciate me. All I want is to know, is for you to show me that you care.
Gary: Why didn't you just say that to me"
Brooke: I tried. I've tried.
Gary: Never like that, you might have said some things that meant to imply that, but I'm not a mind reader...

'Nuff said.

Lesson? Communication = No Bloody Problem In The First Place!!

How To Get Over A Break Up

From reading your blog, I know that you recently went through a bad break up, and I'm currently in that situation. While it's not bad in the sense that we're not talking and hate each other, it's bad in the sense that it hurts every second of every day, and as much as I would rather be with him, he decided that we would be better off apart. How have you been surviving the break up, and getting through it to the other side? How you have been doing it and what has helped you?

Oh friend. I am flattered that you think I could write a 'how-to' post on this, but I think this piece should be more accurately titled "How to turn the corner after a break up, stop crying in the bathroom at work, and begin to enjoy your life again (but still sometimes cry when you hear that one song)"

But that's a really long title for a blog post.

That said, I'm happy to share the things that I've been doing that have helped me get through this messy, mopey time.

Remove the ex from your life (at least for a while)
The truly mutual, friendly break up is a rare bird - usually someone's feelings are bound to be hurt. If you were the injured party, I think it's particularly important to distance yourself for a bit. If you hang out with the ex all the time, you may find yourself trying to be your best, most charming self in an effort to make them see the error of their ways and run back to you. And if you genuinely enjoy each other's company and really like hanging out with each other ... well, that's not going to help anybody get over anybody.

It's really, really hard to take this step and you might even worry that you're hurting this person. Just tell them that you're not trying to be malicious or hurtful and that someday you'd like to be friends, but right now you need some distance for your mental health. Then defriend the emmeffer.

Be 100% honest with yourself about any issues that you had with your ex or the relationship
We all make compromises in relationships and no relationship is perfect - common knowledge, right? But sometimes when we're in the thick of things, we downplay how much something means to us in an effort to keep the peace ... there's not really any point in obsessing over his love for bad Science Fiction is there? But now that you're not together anymore, be honest with yourself about the things that didn't work for you in the relationship. They might not have been huge issues, but have a good think on them and be thankful that you don't have to deal with them anymore.

Put yourself on a dating hiatus
If you just got out of a relationship, especially a long term one, being single feels like visiting a foreign country. And as tempting as it is to hook up with the first applicant for the position of boyfriend, it's probably a bad idea. You're not ready for it and you might end up hurting a lovely, unsuspecting person who just wants to love you.

If you feel weird about being single, view it as a 'dating diet' ... none of that high calorie hooking up and number-swapping for you! Only heaping helpings of girlfriends, fun, and go-nowhere flirting! I've even allotted a specific end-date to my dating diet (Sept 1) to make it seem more fun ... as though I'll immediately begin making out with a delicious gentleman at the strike of midnight on August 31st.

Have heaps of fun with your friends
Now that you're single you probably have heaps more time to spend with all the amazing people in your life. Also, view this time as an opportunity for your friends to go to bat for you - don't be afraid to bawl your little eyes out over beer/cheese/bacon cupcakes. Or around the bonfire. Or at the coffeeshop. Or all of the above. You've helped them through their dramas, they will help you get through this.

But it doesn't have to be all weeping and yelling about how "you were too good for him anyway!" Go to the drive in, or the zoo, or the tarot card reader. Road trip and skinny dip and make popsicles. Do so many fun things that you're too busy to think about whats-their-name.

Make a new plan
If you were in a long term relationship, there's a good chance that this person played into your plans for the future. Maybe you were going to go to your second choice school to be closer to them, or live in the city instead of the mountains. Maybe you were going to work part time because they could support you. But things are different now and doesn't everything feel better if you have a plan? Sit down with a cup of tea and a journal and think about what you really want to do, now that you don't have anyone else to consider. The sky's the limit!

Make some changes
A new flat. A new haircut. A new wardrobe. The change in your relationship status might not feel so completely overwhelming when it's part of a hurricane of changes in your life. I think it also really helps to mix things up a bit so you're not constantly surrounded with the sweater you wore on your first date, the book he gave you for your birthday and couch where you first made out. Besides - this is a totally sanctioned excuse for shopping!

Take care of yourself
It is incredibly, incredibly tempting to devolve into a sweats-wearing, ice cream-snarfing, SATC-viewing mess, but you'll feel heaps better if you look after yourself. If you're going to fanny around the house all day, at least do it in a kinomo. If you're going to pig out, do it goat cheese and baguettes. If you want to watch bad TV, do it with your friends. Don't for get to shave your legs, get some sunshine and get a bit of exercise. It might be hard to get going, but you'll be so glad you did that instead of sitting inside, listening to Jeff Buckley and eating a whole frozen pizza.

Practice the art of letting go
You can't control your ex's decisions, you can only control your responses to them. Maybe they chose to end your relationship. That doesn't mean that you're not amazing and gorgeous and totally, totally loveable. It means that they weren't the right person for you right now.

I'm not a fan of Valentine's Day. I don't really like candy, let alone the kitschy heart-shaped kind, wrapped in horrible pink paper, I don't like the red+pink combo, and I hate pre-made Hallmark cards featuring a teddy bear imploring whoever to be his Valentine. V-Day… to quote the endless fountain of wisdom that is Kramer, "frankly, it sounds made up". With the risk of sounding very cliché, lovers should celebrate their love every day and not just on the 14th of the second month in the Gregorian calendar.

I am aware that routine, a busy daily schedule, THE ECONOMY! (who doesn't blame the economy?) can make a guy feel… well… less inspired about how to show his love for his sweetheart. So guys, here's a mini-guide composed of things that just popped to mind meant to help you with better understanding your lady friend. So go on, give it a read and then proceed to being AWESOME!

Listen, be present, be involved!

Women and cats have at least one thing in common: the craving for attention. There's no denying it. All women need to be listened to, we all want at some point your whole, undivided attention. If a woman tells you this is not true, make no mistake, she is lying!
Fortunately for Y chromosome carriers, this I-wish-to-be-the-center-of-your-universe phase is not permanent. It usually comes around when we're feeling insecure, uncertain, under the weather or in need of someone to open our souls to.
If that happens, don't ignore us hoping it will go away. Take some time, make some tea and listen. It may be something as trivial as a stranger's spiteful remark that got to us, but it's important to know we can come to you for comfort.
Talking to our loved one induces that warm, fuzzy feeling of closeness and intimacy, something lacking in a chit-chat with our best female friend.

Pay attention

Most of the times "women talk" is not that hard to understand if you pay attention. Sometimes not even we know how to express what we want, but if you manage to read the signals your score just went up by 100 points! Morose doesn't mean PMS. It usually means "My day has been awful, I'd like to talk to someone". Now's the time to apply what you've learnt (see above).

Compliment

If you like it, don't keep it to yourself, tell her! "You look really nice in that dress!", "Your hair smells amazing!", "You've got such sexy legs!" this is what I'm talking about. Compliments are Xanax without the side-effects.

You don't need a reason to give flowers

I remember one of the times I got flowers for no special reason, I was coming home from work and D was waiting for me at the tram station, with a big bouquet of white lilies. What better way to tell her that your thought flew back to her during the day than some lovely flowers? And what better thing to come home to than a smile and a hug from the man you love, offered together with some white lilies?

Small favors

The chores are equally divided – she cooks, you do the dishes, she cleans the bedroom, you vacuum the the living room. It's perfectly cool that your relationship is not set in the 50s with the woman in the kitchen and the man reading the newspaper. But how about rewarding her for just being herself every once in a while? How about doing the laundry when it's not even laundry day? Or waking up early on Sunday morning and buying croissants for breakfast? Or preparing her a bath for when she comes back from work? Try it out and you'll see, another 100 points for you!

Surprise!

I am an adept of giving small presents not just when it's a special occasion. It doesn't have to be expensive presents, just something unexpected. This just boosts up the pleasure of receiving it. Take her out for dinner on a week day; go for a walk & an ice cream after work; get her the scarf she was admiring in the window; buy a poetry book by her favorite author, and send it to her by mail without mentioning anything about it; get tickets to the movie she's been dying to see; slip a note in her pocket with a nice quote to brighten up her day… The possibilities are endless.

There you have it! Although this was written having guys in mind as an audience, it can be used by chicks too. Yes ladies, go and tell your man how much you love him. Now excuse me while I go compliment D on his legs.

Whether you are single or in a relationship, Valentine's Day will no doubt have an effect on you every year. Magazines hit you with lingerie spreads, telling you that in order to make your man happy you need to spend at least $200 on the latest lace and ribbon underwear set, bright red ruffled garter and thigh high fishnet stockings. Chocolate shops go crazy with heart and lip shaped chocolate, body paint sets and teddy bears holding boxes of merchandise. Gift shops fill their windows with heart shaped balloons, soft toys with "I Love You" written on them and gift baskets filled with sweet treats that make your mouth water. But what message does this send about Valentine's Day?

It makes me quite sad when I hear that people refuse to celebrate it because they consider it to be an "overly commercialised Hallmark holiday". Yes, it is now, but that's not how it started. Apart from the well known St Valentine's story, some people in France and England believed that February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season, which adds to the idea that Valentine's Day should be a day for romance.
In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was often considered a time for purification. I think Valentine's Day should be viewed simply as a day to celebrate your love in whichever way you'd like to.

If you are currently single – use Valentine's Day to really spoil yourself. Sleep in, dance around your room listening to your favourite music, stretch, watch your favourite movie, spend hours in bed reading, write down a list of everything you love about yourself, paint your nails a bright colour, eat delicious food, bake cookies or cupcakes and decorate them, sing, go for a bike ride or roller skating, have a long bubble bath, get a facial or massage, swim in the ocean or get up to see the sunrise.

If you are in a relationship – spend the entire day doing wonderful activities together. Cook breakfast together (my favourites are French toast or pancakes) and eat in bed, have a picnic in the botanic gardens, write your lover a poem, have a meal at your favourite restaurant or eat fish and chips on the beach (depending on what hemisphere you're in), tell your partner all the things that makes them special to you, have a spa or sauna together, book massages side by side, watch the sunset with a bottle of wine, cuddle up on a beanbag with a DVD, go for a walk and explore new parts of your suburb, create a treasure hunt with little love notes and tiny presents with clues, learn a new language together via podcast or CD and laugh as you mispronounce words, plan a holiday or go for a midnight swim and enjoy hot chocolate with marshmallows when you get home.

Unconditional Self Love - Be Your Own Valentine

I'm always confused by women who get depressed if they happen to be spending Valentine's Day without a date. Why?! I say, celebrate your singlehood! Be proud that you don't need to be attached to another half to feel whole! Be grateful that you have time to work on yourself and be as fabulous as you wanna be! Don't cry. Dance. Laugh. Love.

But this article isn't just for the single girls. Nope! Those of us in relationships forget to dish out the self lovin' too. In fact, sometimes even more so! When someone else is always telling us how pretty and smart and awesome we are, it's definitely nice, but we can sometimes learn to depend on those words, and that's not good. You've surely heard the old advice, "The most important relationship you'll ever have is the one you have with yourself." and it's true. So don't skimp on the inner romance!

Loving yourself is crucial to being happy. If you don't love yourself fully and unconditionally, you will not feel very deserving of happiness. If you don't love yourself, you will never understand how much you have to offer the world and it will all go to waste. I've said before that it is each person's responsibility to be the best person we can possibly be... In order to do this, we need to eliminate self-hate and make it our mission to fall in love with ourselves.

What's stopping you from loving yourself? Would you love yourself if you had more money? If you had a better body? If you had more friends? Say this out loud to yourself and you will realize how ridiculous this mindset really is. Would you ever say to your lover, "I will love you when you make more money." or "I will love you when you lose 10 pounds." Of course not! So it's unreasonable to set those kinds of conditions for yourself. You don't deserve that. Everyone needs love, and no one should have to jump through hoops to get it, especially not from themselves! There is nothing wrong with trying to better yourself, but restricting self love in order to do so is unhealthy, ineffective, and stupid. Don't subject yourself to that kind of torture! You can let the love flow and improve yourself at the same time.

Celebrate yourself
Everyone is different, yet everyone is equally deserving of love. Instead of trying to be someone you're not, celebrate the little things that make you unique. Don't paint your pale skin orange with self tanner, keep it looking fantastic by liberally applying SPF and moisturizer. Don't suffer your way through business school because your family wants you to when all you want to do is make art. Make the most of what you have, don't fight it.

See the beauty in others
When you look for beauty everywhere, it will be easier to see it in yourself. Practice makes perfect in all aspects of life, so the more you give love, the easier it will be to accept it. Make sure your family and friends know that you love them. Don't just think good things about people, tell them! No one ever tires of hearing wonderful things about themselves, so don't hold back! Making other people feel fantastic will make you feel fantastic and make your relationships blossom like crazy.

Cute out your living space
Make your house/apartment/bedroom/dorm as fabulous as possible. You should feel happy and peaceful immediately upon entering it. Your space should boost your mood and your creativity. Everyone has different preferences for how they want their home to be, but personally, my house and I get along best when I keep it clean, organized, bright, and colorful. I like flowers, pictures of people that I love, zero clutter, and fruit. Music is usually playing around here and I am pretty insane about making it smell good. I have a ridiculous stash of scented candles, insense, air fresheners and those little wax things that you put in a vaporizor that melt and smell lovely.

Do what you love to do
This might be the most important thing of all. Don't fill up your free time with television or facebook. These things have their place, but should not be a regular, major part of your lifestyle. Use your free time to do something you feel good about. Create somthing beautiful. Learn something new. Help others.

I have in the past always been a bit shy about letting out some pf my really taste in clothing and since my mom and sister always had the same taste and I was the "odd one out" so to speak they would buy a lot of my clothes. However, in the last few years I have more and more started to buy my own stuff and wear outfits that are me. In my last post I discussed my new showing approach and have been busy making lists and searching for inspiration.

Book Club - Guest Review of Confessions of a Shopaholic

For this months Book Club the lovely Leia of HiFashion reviewed the Confessions of a Shopaholic Book series:

Book: Confessions of a Shopaholic

Author: Sophie Kinsella

Genre: Chick-lit

Overall review: 3/5 stars

Confessions of a Shopaholic is witty, fun, and impossible to put down! It is best suited to women of all ages - preferably those who love to shop. It may teach you a thing or two about getting into debt!

But as far as chick-lit goes, I wouldn't say this was a favorite. I actually prefer Sophie Kinsella's other books to the Shopaholic series. There were a few "tiny niggles" (as Kinsella would say): I wish that Rebecca Bloomwood's appearance was actually described. I had no idea what she looked like - all I knew was that she had a penchant for designer clothing! It would have been much more fun if I could picture her - after all, her best friend and boyfriend were well-portrayed.

There were also a few small quirks in her writing style that bothered me (although you probably think I'm being over-analytical!) - she used the word "brightly" so many times that it started to irritate me, and Rebecca Bloomwood seemed more of an alcoholic than shopaholic! It seemed that alcohol was her cure for all of life's dramas, because some kind of drink presented itself every few pages. I'm not sure I'm happy with the kind of message this sends, especially to young readers!

Perhaps I made a mistake watching the movie before reading the book, but I do think that for something that has so much to do with aesthetics, it is much more fun to be able to actually visualise the clothes and shoes and bags. Personally, I much preferred the movie, but if you're on vacation or need something light to read, then pick up Confessions of a Shopaholic!

Shopping Mantra for 2010

I have been somewhat frustrated with my wardrobe for some time now. I really feel that the pieces I have are not congruent with the person that I am and want to present to the world. And while a whole new wardrobe and shopping spree would seem to be the answer I believe that in order to achieve my goal I need a solid plan that will allow me to build a new wardrobe over time.

Thus this my new approach to tackling my wardrobe:

shopping around, trying new and different stores
taking my time, looking at lots of different stores and seeing everything that is out there before deciding what to buy
quality over quantity, buying one good quality or favoured piece over 4 or 5 trendy inferior pieces
love over lust, buying one piece that I love as opposed to something I think is cute and have seen in magazines or on other girls
finding inspiration, using the internet and magazines for inspiration on pieces that I love and help me in the shopping process
making a list, using a list to search for the exact items that will make up my ideal wardrobe

Wednesday Wishlist 11_01 by **eLLa** featuring Christian Louboutin shoes

To start the new year off these are the items that I am currently keeping a lookout for:

1.) A new pair of sunglasses - I left my old ones in a dressing room while shopping:(

2.) A new signature scent - I have always just used what I happen to get as a present so this year I want to get my very own perfume

3.) A new bikini - as you may remember this item was on a previous list as well, the hunt continues

4.) A new hat for the beach - while the one here is a little more extravagant than what I want, I am on the market for a woven fedora style piece

5.) Summer dresses - I am on the look out for some cute summer dresses that I can just slip on and that can translate from day to night

6.) A new handbag - while I am still very thrilled with my trusty black handbag that I purchase for next to nothing a few months ago I am ready to add a colourful companion (not quite as bright)

7.) A belt - for some time now I have toyed with the idea of belts and with the recent purchase of a fabulous navy dress that just screams to styled with a beige woven belt, as pictured

8.) New flats - I have a few pairs of ballet flats in neutral colours but would like to get a few embellished or coloured ones.

9.) New boots - as winter stuff starts to come into the stores I am on the hunt for a pair of winter boots for everyday wear to balance out my heeled booties which are for fancier occasions

10.) Winter jerseys - despite having lived in Canada last year and surviving -25 degrees my winter clothing is scarce so I want to get a good collection of winter jerseys and tops together

How did you choose your blogs name?
Originally, I was inspired by the site CollegeHumor, which my boyfriend read all the time. It was a great name that really summed up what the site was about and made it easy to understand. When I started my site, I wanted a name that would immediately let people know what the site was about, too, so that's why I chose College Fashion.

How long have you been blogging for?
It'll be 3 years on March 1st, 2010!

What made you start your blog?
I was in college and was reading tons of fashion blogs in my spare time, when I realized that NONE of them catered to my demographic - college students! All the blogs and magazines were for either 40 year old women who could afford couture gowns or 16 year olds in high school. So that's how College Fashion was born - it's the first fashion blog exclusively written by and for college students.

When you started your blog did you ever think that it would develop into a full time job?
Not originally! I just did it for fun at the beginning, and once the site started to become more popular, that's when I realized I really needed to work on it full-time. At the beginning, it was really just a hobby.

What made you expand so, and employ interns to write for you?
Well I've always wanted to have more voices on the site, because I want CF to cover lots of different perspectives on fashion. I know trends and styles can be SO different across the globe, and I want every college girl to be able to relate to the content we feature. The immediate change for me, though, that made me hire interns when I did was that I was no longer a college student as of this spring, and it didn't feel right to keep writing a blog about college fashion by myself when I wasn't even a student. I want the site to be authentic and real, never out of touch.

Even though you have a staff of writers your blog still manages to maintain a lovely cohesive quality about it, how do you manage that?
Thanks! That's something we really work hard for. It really comes down to the attitude of our blog - our posts are always positive, always helpful, and always relevant to college girls. Also, I edit and approve everything before it hits the site, so I always have a hand in the content.

Do you allow our writers to come up with their own topics or do you assign them articles to write? We collaborate. I want to know what they want to write about, and I tell them what I think would be cool and we discuss. I think that's the best way to do it - it's easy to tell when people are writing about things they don't care about, and I don't want that to happen on CF.

I think that all of your readers were so excited about the fashion week posts and all secretly wished they could be you, how did it come about that you were invited to fashion week?
It all comes down to how popular your blog is. I've applied for press credentials at fashion week in the past and been denied because I didn't have enough traffic coming to the site. Since we have lots of traffic now and people know about our blog, I think that's why we were invited this year(2009).

What keeps you inspired to keep blogging?
It's all about the readers and helping them out! I get so many emails from girls who love the site, saying it's helped them become more stylish or feel better about themselves. That's the biggest motivation for me - helping people with their questions, educating people, and making fashion accessible to everyone.

What are the three blogs that inspire you the most?
Hmm, that's a tough one! WhoWhatWear (http://www.whowhatwear.com) is great because they have such a unique blogging style, and the content is always relevant and pretty cutting edge. It's just a great daily fashion blog. Next I would have to say Jak & Jil (http://www.jakandjil.com/blog) because everything posted there is just droolworthy. I get so much outfit inspiration from that site! Finally, I love Gala Darling's blog iCiNG (http://www.galadarling.com) first because I reached out to her for blogging advice and she helped push me in the direction of a really positive change. Second because I'm a big fan of all things pink and sparkly, and third because I'm a virgo and she's all about the virgo power and obsessive organization/list-making!

What would you say is necessary for a successful blog?
An original idea is number one. There are so many fashion blogs out there that it's impossible to be relevant if you don't have a unique perspective. And don't copy another blog's concept! You will always be seen as a copy, which just makes you look desperate and will never lead to success. Find your own perspective, do your own thing, and be unique! Also, you have to have quality content. You could have the best blog idea in the world, but if you don't have content that's helpful, relevant, and unique, you have nothing. They say content is king, and it's really true. Also, be nice to your fellow bloggers - don't spam them and say "LINK TO MY BLOG!!", beg them for link exchanges, or plug your site in every comment you leave on their site. That stuff is annoying, people see right through it, and it won't get you anywhere! Be a friend first, treat them like a person instead of a tool to help you promote your blog, and funny enough, they'll be more likely to want to help you (and your blog) out in the future.

Why do you think your blog is so popular?
I think College Fashion is successful for two big reasons. First, we do well because we are different from all the other blogs out there. We are the only fashion blog out there that's exclusively written by and for college students, and people know and respect that. If they want info on college student fashion, they know where to find it! Also, we ALWAYS keep our readers in mind with everything we do. We don't do paid blog posts, cover irrelevant topics, or ignore what they want. We cater to our readers and always strive to write content that either solves a problem for them, entertains them, or gets them talking. They are the most important thing to us.

What do you friends, family and loved ones say about your blog?
They think it's cool! They are always bragging about it to everyone they know, which I think is really cute. Even though my mom and dad are not tech savvy or into fashion at ALL, they totally support what I'm doing and even check the website from time to time. They're all very encouraging and awesome about it.

Do think that you will continue blogging for years to come or are you contemplating selling and entering the 9-5 work world?
I'm not really a 9-5 type person, and the idea of "getting a job" has never really appealed to me as a creative type. Also, CF is doing really well, and I really love my job right now. I think I'll continue to do it as long as it continues to make me happy, and I can't see that changing anytime soon.

PERSONAL

From your blog, we all know you were a fashion student, what made you go into fashion and what school did you study at?
I actually wasn't a fashion student! I majored in Marketing at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Fashion was just an interest I had on the side and I never planned for it to be a career at all!

Who taught you about fashion and style?
I am pretty much 100% self-taught when it comes to style, although my stepmom is probably the first person who got me into fashion. Growing up, I never really had anyone around me who was very into style or fashion, so I kinda had to learn about things on my own. It was a LOT of trial and error. Then I moved in with my dad and stepmom as a teenager and my stepmom really started to get me into fashion. She was always bringing home cute clothes and shoes from the boutique she worked at, talking about the brands she liked and the finds she scored on eBay - it all just rubbed off and I was soon obsessed too.

What are your basic wardrobe essentials?
A great pair of dark-wash jeans (I love my J Brand skinnies!), a solid, comfortable pair of boots (my current faves are Frye "Veronica" boots), plenty of lightweight tanks (LNA makes my favorites), cardigans in solid colors, and standout jewelry. I just got a great two-finger ring that's a great conversation piece.

What are your top shopping tips?
Know what you have and what you need! Make a list if need be, and think about every piece and how it will fit into your closet. Also, do "cost per wear" calculations. I wrote a blog post on this.

What does your daily make up routine consist of?
Tinted moisturizer, brow pencil (I'm a natural blonde so my eyebrows are practically invisible without it), a little eyeliner, blush, mascara.

What is your evening/going out make up routine?
I am an eye makeup addict - I love to do smokey eyes or black liquid liner and usually wear lip gloss at night, too. Nothing TOO crazy, though.

What is your favourite colour?
Definitely pink. If I didn't live with my boyfriend, my apartment would be the ultimate girly, sparkly bachelorette pad.

I love reading and am always curious as to what peoples favourite books are, what is your favourite book?
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami - it's a really interesting story that sucks you in. Also, he makes great references to American culture, despite being a Japanese writer.

What is your favourite food?
Vegan nachos or vegetarian sushi. Also any sour or gummy candy.

Of all the places you have travelled with is your favourite place and why?
It would have to be Ecuador. My grandfather built banks and hospitals there when my dad was growing up, and my dad brought our family there to visit when I was just 7 years old. To go from small-town America to a 3rd-world country at such a young age completely changed my view of the world, and made me so much more aware of other cultures and appreciative of everything I have. Even today I remember it SO vividly - that trip really changed me.

Housekeeping checklist

Got this adorable list from a book of my sisters, not sure what it was called but since I've moved back into my own place it has become quite useful once again.

Once a day

_ Bed: Make it.

_ Phone: Charge it.

_ Laundry: Dirty – bin it; clean – put it away.

_ Windows and curtains: Open and air room.

_ Cushions: Plump.

_ Write "to do" list: Grocery store, errands ect.

_ Tissues, clutter, junk mail: All to bin and empty.

_ Bins in the kitchen: Empty, especially if you had takeout.

_ Black bin bags: Take them OUT – so unsightly.

_ Washing up: Ensure washing up is done daily, if not after each meal, to avoid build-up and growth of mould.

_ Wipe down: Worktops, the table, and frequented surfaces.

_ Blow out: All candles before leaving the house.

_ Sweep room: If time, or dustpan and brush.

_ Water plants: Indoors and out, check cut flowers.

Once a week

_ Duvet covers and pillows: Change them. Note: pillowcases and duvets must always be part of a matching set.

_ Carpets and rugs: Hoover.

Get the Vileda Supermop out and take it for a spin, particularly in kitchen and bathroom and on any lino flooring.

_ Toilets: Disinfect. Grim, but got to be done. Put your marigolds on.

_Widow Twankie: Get your laundry up to date; essential to keep clean undies and freshly pressed jeans in constant cycle.

_ Ocado order: Make online selection for supermarket home delivery, unless you have a pair of shoes that need supermarket training.

Once a month

_ Wipe, dust and polish: Your lair from top to toe. Yes, this does include windows and windowsills. For wooden furniture use beeswax polish; not only does it smell heavenly, but the furniture will repay you for your care and attention.

_ Hoover or sweep: (Flooring) under sofas and beds

_ Fridge: Ruthlessly eliminate any foods that are past their sell by date. Apply this to magazines and old papers; will you really want them in three years? If yes, file; if not, relegate to recycle.

_ Cooker inspection: Have you used it? If so clean it, and the same applies to your microwave; give it a wipe inside and out.

_ Dance around: With a feather duster and try to get corners.

_ Feeling energetic: Flip your mattress.

_ Go deep: Go right into the depths of the laundry bin and check nothing is loitering there.

Once a year

_ Outing: Manuals and well-groomed housewives recommend and annual trip to the cleaners for duvets, quilts and rugs.

_ Curtains and blinds: Take down for an annual spring clean.

_ Dust: Attack the tops and bottoms of all the nooks and crannies that you neglect in a weekly or monthly blitz.

_ Investigate: Exactly what you have stored under the stairs.

OR – get professional cleaners to come for half a day and blitz everything with industrial strength while you go to the gallery or something.

In addition to 'I'm washing my hair', reason for refusing a date can now include:

    Filing paperwork, love letters and bills, doing tax returns.

    Cleaning cupboards, in kitchen, bathroom and beyond.

    Dusting your chandelier.

    Polishing silverware and jewellery.

    Sorting out your underwear drawer – refold, and chuck.

ASK ELLA - Blogging tips and tricks

A while back I was contacted by a reader who was starting her own blog and wanted some tips. So while I still feel like a novice 99.9% of the time, even though I have been blogging just shy of a year, I sent her the following tips:

DEDICATION – is very important. Blogging is going to take a lot of your time and you have to be dedicated and willing to work hard.

THEME – choosing the right "theme" for your blog is also important. What are you passionate about what do you want to writing about? What do you want to learn about. Blogging is as much about writing about what you know as it is writing about what you learn, and at times even more so. Tweak your appearance till you have created the blog you want and look at other blogs for resources on creating your ideal appearance.

NETWORKING – is an integral part of blogging. Your followers, readers and fellow bloggers are your network and are for the most part a great source of support. Interact with readers who leave comments, follow other bloggers on twitter and leave them messages. Create friendships. Take part in blogs and any series that fellow bloggers run such as the Glamourous Grad Student's City Chic. Leave comments on other blogs as well which can often be a great source of traffic to your blog. Ask your favourite blogs to do link swaps, you add their blog to your links list and they add yours.

INSPIRATION – is something you need a constant source of. Always look for it no matter where you are. I keep a note book and am always writing down topics words and ideas. Also use your favourite blogs as sources for ideas. DO NOT COPY THEM, but be inspired by them.

RESEARCH & READING – is the backbone of a good article, especially if it is something that you are not too knowledgeable about yourself. Take time to research topics you love and again you will find inspiration for new articles. Set aside time to search the web for elements for your blog. Use sites like we heart it and flickr for pictures to add colour.

ORGANISATION – is important. You need to organise your ideas decide when you are going to post your articles. What you are going to post about and how often. This is especially necessary when you get particularly busy with classes or work. Make use of the scheduling feature and pre-type a week's worth of posts that will automatically be published on specific dates.

RESOURCES – Make use of social networking like twitter and facebook. Some interesting twitter applications to try out are tweetmeme (allows readers to retweet your articles) and twitterfeed (automatically tweets your latest article for you). Use polyvore or Looklet for outfit compilations. Widgetbox is also a handy tool for creating headers and buttons. For advertising look into Affiliate Programmes or something like Project Wonderful. Problogger is also an amazingly helpful site as is the series that Megan did over on Charade about starting your own blog. Her resources post is incredibly helpful. Lastly for a bit of free advertising try out the Indie Style Media Ad Exchange where your ad is shown on other sites who are signed up and their ad shows on yours.

Goals for 2010 - Starting with myself

As the New Year signals "a clean slate" so to speak it is a good time to start deciding what you would like to achieve. While I personally have so many things that I want to do this year it has resulted in somewhat of a confusion in my mind as to how I am going to be able to do everything and when I am going to get everything done. Also in true me style the year has scarcely begun and I have been stressing about what my next move is, where do i go from here, what am I going to do when I graduate at the end of the year? What am I going to do my masters in? Am I going to be going overseas? Can I get a bursary? Should I wait and go overseas next year? These thoughts are all whizzing through my head at 100 miles an hour.

So, I thought I would start small. With myself and leave the rest of it for another day.

This year I want to start taking care of myself. I want to make sure that I face each day looking and feeling the very best that I can whether I am going out, at work or in doors for the day studying.

So I want to:

1.) Get up each week day at 7:30

2.) Eat breakfast everyday

3.) Get dressed and look presentable everyday no matter what I have planned

4.) Take my vitamins everyday

5.) Watch the news every morning so I am on top of world events

6.) Say my affirmations daily while I get ready

7.) Work on defining my style with pupose and designing a closet around that

8.) Buying fewer pieces and saving up money to shop instead of buying frivolous items on a whim

9.) I want to have fun with my hair and try a few new styles

12.) I want to learn how to do my make up professionally

These are the thingst to treat myself to, to start the year. The rest of my worries and anxieties can take a backseat for now.

While I am not quite a girl, but not yet a woman- I am a young adult. Lately, between all of my travel, back to school shopping, style posts, I've been giving some thought to what it means to be a woman in the 21st century. And not a ditzy, perfume wearing, shopaholic, clubbing woman. I'm talking about about an empowered woman. She is confident, beautiful, and in possesion of the skills, clothes, and knowledge she needs to make a wonderful life for herself. Why 15 things every woman should own? Well, I am currently 14 years old, and in keeping with the theme set in this post- I will be 15 at my next birthday, and I should have amassed these 15 things. Here is what I think every woman should have in her life:

1. The Perfect Dress- And I don't think it has to be black, either. (Black has the tendancy to make me look like a goth) Choose your favourite colour(s) and find this perfect dress. You should be able to wear it to cocktail parties, weddings, dances, graduations, or times when you just want to feel extra cute!

2. A Passport- Because travelling is eye-opening and interesting, not to mention great style inspiration! And what is more fabulous then jetting off to Europe or America? Nothing, that's what.

3. A Makeup Kit- Every woman's kit will be different- some will hold barely 12 products, while others will need shelves to organize there collection. I think every woman should own a makeup kit because it's a mood booster and it helps you feel great, and it's totally fun! Besides, studies show that women who wear makeup will get a promotion faster. Who knew?

4. An Ipod- Because music is the soul of life. It has the power to insire and move, and bring happiness and joy. And when you have an Ipod, you get to enjoy all the fun of buying cute headphones and cases! What 21st century woman doesn't have a portable music player, full of fabulous songs?

5. A Gorgeous Wallet- Instead of having to dig around in your purse, whip out a fantastic wallet- it should carry your keys, credit/debit cards, cash, coupons, I.D, and receipts. Mine is a beautiful black wallet that was a present from my sisters 2 years ago- I wouldn't even dream of carrying something else. You should be able to toss it into your bag and go.

6. A Best Lady Friend- While you don't own this, what would a woman be without one? If you have nothing else on this list- you must have a best lady friend! She should be honest, caring, funny, intelligent, has some similar and some different interests, who goes fun adventures with you, does silly things at midnight and make you feel better. The one you call when you had the crappiest day in the world because hearing her voice makes it better.

7. A Perfect Coat- Preferrably a cut that will never go out of style- peacoats and trenchs are my favourites. You should be able to wear this coat with ANYTHING, and it should be good enough quality to last for years.

8. A Gorgeous Planner- Personally, I am in love with my soft cover moleskine planner. This item is necessary- to be filled with all of the things to do in your life. Now, you will never miss an appointment, party, or anything ever again. A truly essential item that you will carry everywhere, so make it stylish. I love moleskines but there are other cute options like pink leather planners and such.

9. Big, Dark Sunglasses- For some extra movie star appeal, to be incognito, to hide dark circles, and to spy on your Ex while in Starbucks. O.k, maybe not that last one! Seriously though, these are such an essential! They help you look pulled together on days when you feel blah, and they protect your eyes from the sun- which could actually prevent eye wrinkles.

10. A Scarf- This is a personal style obsession of mine, but every woman should have one. It adds instant style to a t-shirt, suit, or dress. No matter what colour or style you choose, and if you want to wear it in a Parisian knot, a head wrap, or a knot- it will ad instant oomph and style to your outfit. How very French.

11. A Big Bag- Because you need to carry around lots of things, like your planner, cellphone, wallet, pens, a book, waterbottle, and all of the other things your purse seems to collect. Everyone has their favourites, so there is no right style, but you need one!

12. Fantastic Gloves- Probally one of the lesser known items on this list, but I believe that the right pair of gloves can instantly pull an outift together, especially in the Fall, Winter, and Spring when you are so often see in a coat, gloves are instant style. This is not the time to be sedate- amass a collection of pinks, blacks, blues and all colours of the rainbow!

13. A Favourite Accessory- As of the moment, mine are super long earrings. They accentuate my long neck and elegant collarbones- 2 of my favourite parts of my body. Cafe Fashionista is rarely seen without a cocktail ring, it is her favourite- something you can incorporate into an outfit and something you love. It tends to change with time, but they are essentail, as they make the outfit you.

14. A Pair of Heels- Oh, what a glorious item! They improve your posture, make you look slimmer, are impossibly chic, and give you an air of confidence. Black or purple, closed or peeptoe, 3 or 4 inch, the choice is yours. You may have to spend a little bit of extra money to get the perfect ones, but darling- it is so worth it.

15. A Hat- You can pull one off, there are about a million kinds out there, so I don't want to hear any excuses! Berets are so, so chic, top off an outfit perfectly, can be worn with an air of nonchalance- and you will look like you stepped off the train from France. Vintage shops are paritcurly good for this, as the hats there will carry an old movie star glam feel.

Landing your dream job – Part One

It's all very well and good to have all the knowledge on where to bank and how to invest but in order to put these valuable principles into practice you need to have money. So, in today's edition of Money Talks we will be dealing with job hunting, how to get one, how to keep it and your rights and benefits.

As such, this post is divided into three parts:

The ins and outs of how to get a job
Making sure you keep it
Keeping yourself empowered by knowing your rights and employment benefits

HOW TO GET A JOB

Here are the 6 steps involved in landing that dream job whether it be a part time student gig or a fulltime graduate position:

Preparing your CV or resume
The job search
Approaching employers
The application form
The interview
Getting the job

Step one: The CV or resume

This is a very important step and without a CV/resume you cannot apply for a job. Your CV/resume is the very first thing that your future employer sees. It is their introduction to you, so it is very important to make it a good one.

Always make sure that it:

has all the important info about you
is neatly typed and easy to read
has no grammar or spelling mistakes
is 100% truthful and accurate

Also make sure that you have all the necessary back up documents available at a moment's notice, this includes degrees, marks, reference letters or school certificates.

The set out and information included in a CV/resume varies from country to country so the information here will differ from what you know. In South Africa the basic structure should include information such as: name, address, telephone no, ID no, birthday, place of birth, condition of health, citizenship, marital status, dependants, drivers license details, tax number, current employment. The sections following should be: education – listing your highest qualification to your lowest, work experience – starting with your latest job; give dates; job description; name & address of employer; reference details, General – indicating any community work or extra details indicating the type of person you are, Special Achievements – sports awards, school certificates, were you a prefect on any school boards, Interest/Hobbies&Sports – these should be genuine and you should be open to discussion. Keep all information relevant.

Step two: The job search

This part of the process requires time and research. Your job is to identify the best places to find potential employers for the type pf job you would like to get. Here are a few suggestions of places to look:

Newspapers
Trade magazines
Employment agencies
Professional organisations
Employee organisations
Employer organisations
Community/Shop notice boards
Internet

Step three: Approaching employers

There are two ways of approaching potential employers:-

replying to an advertisement
cold-calling

In order to do either of these you need to write a job application letter.

Here are some basic rules and guidelines:

Keep it short and sweet – one page
Neat and tidy – type it up
Accuracy – check spelling and grammar
Specify – ask about the type of job you are seeking not just any job
Name – try your best to find out the name of the person you are writing to
Documentation – these include your CV, references and school/varsity records
Contact details – so they can reply to you
Individual letters – write each letter individually
Copy – keep one of each letter you send so you know what has and has not been said

If you are replying to an advertisement make sure you follow the specific instructions. Always keep it brief and to the point as well as professional and neat. If you are cold-calling be sure to find out the name of the individual you are writing to/contacting. Tell them who you are and your reason for contact. Do extra research and find out about the company and weave your info into your letter to show then you are interested in their company.

Step four: The application form

Most times you will be required to fill in a job application form. Make sure to read the entire form before filling it in to avoid mistakes. Write neatly and avoid spelling errors. If you can, photocopy the form or take an extra copy and do a trial run.

Step five: The interview

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Be yourself
Dress smartly
Be on time or a little early
Answer questions in a clear and precise manner
Keep eye contact
Speak up and take a moment to formulate an answer
Have your portfolio present containing all previous correspondence and important documentation
Know the company before you get there, simple background knowledge
Questions – have any questions prepared before hand and think about what salary you would like
Find out about what happens next, know what the following contact will be after the interview
Have your diary and a notebook and pen to take down follow up dates or notes of anything necessary for later
End off by saying thank you regardless of the outcome

Step six: Getting the job

So you followed all the steps and you landed the job, always say thank you either in person or writing. Be sure to read your contract very thoroughly and take not of important information. If you do not receive a formal employment document it is advisable that you write down what you understand the terms and conditions of your employment to be and show it to your employer.

Everyday Makeup - basics

I'm definitely not a make-up expert, but for me, looking natural is most important. I thought I would share some of my tips and tricks to achieve an everyday, natural look.

1.) Prep the skin

My skin is naturally very dry, so moisturizing it is always my first step. I read once that everything you put on your skin is absorbed by it, and the chemicals in store-bought creams can end up in your blood stream. I don't know if this is true or not, but I do try to use natural products to moisturize my skin. At night, I slather my face with natural shea butter, and in the morning, I apply a thin layer of almond oil and massage it in. Both are very affordable, last a long time, and can also be used on dry hair.

2.) Dark circles

The skin under my eyes is naturally slightly darker than the rest of my skin. I think many people are prone to dark under eye circles, especially those with South Asian skin tones. I find that using concealer can make you suddenly look awake; my favourite is Benefit's Boi-ing which I use from my Realness of Concealness kit.
Some natural remedies if you suffer from dark circles:

Use cold slices of cucumer or used teabags on your eyes for a few minutes.
Gently tap almond oil under your eyes before bed at night.
Get plenty of sleep!
Drink plenty of water.
Make sure you eat plenty of green

3.) Foundation

I don't find that foundation is a necessity for everyday. It is great for making skin tones appear even, or covering up blemishes. However, I find that it can sometimes look cakey or unnatural. Some ways to combat this is to mix your foundation with some moisturizer before applying it, making it thinner and letting your natural radiance shine through as well.
I do really like to use a tinted moisturizer, though. I have heard that in the winter, foundation can act as a barrier for your skin against the cold and the wind - I'm hoping this is true for tinted moisturizer as well! My favorite is Benefit's YouRebel.

A great, natural-looking foundation is the one made by BareMinerals. It's supposed to be really healthy for your skin as well. I bought mine in a kit from Selfridges; I think it was around £50 in total, but it came with two colors of foundation (skin tone can vary during the course of the year), a blush/contour color called Warmth (one of my favorite colors ever! It's so natural), a finishing powder, and three brushes. Lots of make-up companies have started to sell mineral make-up, so it's definitely worth trying out. What I love about mineral make-up is that you can apply as little or as much as you like, depending on the coverage you need.
But, for me, it is not something I use every day - just because of the hassle of it! My top priority is quick and easy in the mornings.

4.) Blush

Too many people forget to use blush! I think it's really important, though, because it really gives your skin a healthy glow. My two favorites are the Warmth by BareMinerals, as mentioned above, and Benefit's Benetint .

5.) Eyes

I think we can all agree that eye make-up is the most important! I know that for girls with fairer skin and lighter hair, mascara is an everyday essential. For me, that essential is eyeliner/kajal. I only wear mascara a couple of times a week, and on special occasions (current favorites are DiorShow and MaxFactor Masterpiece). Usually, I will just draw a thin line of pencil eyeliner on top, underneath, and inside the eye, and I am ready to go. My favorite eyeliners are Benefit's BadGal liner and Stila's Kajal eye liner.
As for eye shadow (when I have time to worry about it!) I recently bought the Benefit Big Beautiful Eyes kit (I'm sorry if I sound like a Benefit ad, I just really like their products!). It has got lovely, natural colors, and the darker ones can be used for a dressier look. If you are trying to look as natural as possible, it's important to choose eyeshadows that are matte, rather than sparkly or shimmery (the latter can be saved for nights out!)

6.) Lips

Much as I love red lipstick, it is a bit dramatic for every day! I have very dry lips (I swear by Carmex) so I usually start with some lip stain - Stila's Cherry Crush or Benetint - and put some lip balm on top. You can also line your lips with a natural/nude shade and top with gloss, like the ever-popular Lancome Juicy Tu be.
Those are my tips for achieving a simple, natural look! My morning routine usually consists of concealer, kajal, and blush, but when I have more time, I try to incorporate some of the other things mentioned here. What are your everyday make-up essentials? Post about them in the comments below!

I have long wanted to write my own definition of beautiful. So, here we go! This is what I, and not society, thinks makes a beautiful woman today.

To be frank, I'm fed up with being told what beautiful is. I don't want to hear one more time that being tan makes you look prettier- it has nothing to do with how "beautiful" you are. I am not 6 foot tall and I don't weigh 110 pounds and I'm not going to. I don't have perfect proportions but that does not make me less beautiful. So what does make you beautiful?

♥ A beautiful woman is passionate about something- art, design, writing, math, fashion, politics, whatever!

♥ A beautiful woman is stylishly organized. She has a lovely planner and is never rumaging through a disorganized purse for keys.

♥ A beautiful woman speaks eloquently. She uses proper sentences and can communicate her ideas.

♥ A beautiful woman may know what the current trends are. And then she wears whatever she feels like and makes her feel good.

Life Lessons From University

I graduated yesterday after four long years of study and fun in university. The speeches were long-winded and referenced the recession a bit too frequently. Lots of standing around, clapping and shaking hands… but at the same time, it was good to receive my parchment with my degree, watch the pomp of the PhD graduation and receive some encouraging comments from my dissertation supervisor. Of course all this meant that my friends and I spent a few hours that night reminiscing about college life and the lessons we learned in four years…

Friends do not magically appear at your door. You need to go out and meet new people, talk to the person next to you in lectures and tutorials, join clubs or societies, make a contribution to student politics and socialise with your housemates. Friends can be made at any age on the basis of any interest and most importantly, may be the person you least expect to end up being friends with. Friendships need work, maintenance and love. They will have their good times and they will have their bad times…

Know when to say goodbye to someone who is no longer a friend and to distance yourself from some who is a negative drain on you. Recognise when it is a time to hold your ground and defend your opinions, and when you just need to quieten down. Let fights go and don't bring them back up again four years later 'cos that's just poor form! Also the girl that you thought was an unpleasant person can change so always always give them the benefit of the doubt.

Alcohol is great but it's also extremely horrible at the same time. Know your limits, don't mix your drinks, keep an eye on your drink and always always try to remember that your judgement is affected by drinking. Don't be the girl whose life is affected by a stupid decision made while drunk.

Experimentation is the name of the game in university. At uni, you have so many unbelievable opportunities to try new things so go experiment with identities, interests, looks, clothes, sports, classes and so on. You might never know, you could discover you have a natural flair for computer games or a esoteric interest in 16th century English literature.

Choose whom you live with very carefully. I have lived with random strangers and my best friends, and both of these living arrangements were fraught with difficulties. Different personality types tend to clash and you have to be able to walk away from household arguments without affecting your friendship. Also, living together will tend to expose any cracks in a unhealthy friendship so beware.

Some housemates can be odd about household stuff and can made random requests about the cleanliness/ quietness/ visitors/ cooking. Listen to their requests and make a compromise… Try to keep your house/ apartment's public areas somewhat clean and make a suitable arrangement with your housemates about this. Have a filthy, messy bedroom if you want but having clean tidy public areas can prevent so many arguments.

Try to start projects early in the semester by even getting the resources and laying the basic groundwork for a good essay. Contribute to tutorials and ask lecturers questions if you are confused. Remember lecturers don't really buy the excuse of 'my computer broke' or 'the printer crashed' so get your projects finished with plenty of time for technical errors or horrible hangovers. Should you be genuinely ill or otherwise unable to finish a project, your lecturer should have informed you in your module guidelines about the best way to proceed.

Most importantly, remember university is about both learning and having fun. Find that balance, get good grades but also have those memories from that crazy night out.

Instead of trying to cake on tons of makeup, copy the look of your best friend, or mimic what you see in a magazine, why don't you play up your favourite feature? Do you want to enhance your gorgeous green eyes, flawless charcoal skin, or sculpted cheekbones? Decide what feature is your favourite, or what people compliment you on the most, and then use this blog post to play up your favourite feature!

Remember, if you are playing up one particular feature, keep the rest of your face low key so that particular feature stands out!

Lucious Lips

Before you go to bed at night, put a coat of vaseline on your lips to prep them and make them soft and smooth for tomorrow.

Use an ultra- sheer, shimmery gloss that has a hint of colour, to add sparkle and shine and accent the natural shape of your lips.

Flawless Skin

When you cleanse your face tonight, mix some white sugar and extra virgin olive oil together and apply to your face. The sugar is a great exfoliant and the extra virgin olive oil makes your skin silky smooth and super soft.

Instead of covering up your great skin with foundation and powder, try a tinted moisturizer to let your natural skin glow through. If you can, even go without foundation…………and know that we're all very jealous.

Sculpted Cheekbones

Next time you go out for a walk on a cold day, check the colour that your cheeks turn in the cold air. This is your natural pigmentation and should be the blush colour you try to match.

Once, you've applied your blush, use a highlighter on the top of your cheekbones so they really stand out. To find your cheekbones, place 2 fingers under the outside corner of your eye. You bottom finger should be resting on your cheekbone.

Stunning Eyes

Eyes are the window to the soul, after all. Eyes are easy to play up, and can become very captivating and lovely with a few simple tips.

Apply a neutral eyeshadow from your lash line up to your crease and extend a little above the crease. This provide the background for the next step.

Apply a thin layer of black eyeliner along the upper lash line, as close to the lashes as possible. Wing slightly at the ends to create a fun look!

Awesome Hair

If you have naturally beautiful hair, stick with what you got! Don't waste your time on blow dryers and flat irons if your hair is already fantastic.

It doesn't matter weather your hair is curly, wavy, or straight. Put in an anti-frizz serum the night before and let air dry. In the morning brush and go for natural and beautiful hair!

The 20’s = Puberty for the mind

I thought the teen years were awkward, but it seems like puberty has an equally blundering and self-conscious sibling known as the 20s.

Rather than growth spurts, hair in new places, and manic sexual urges you have new ideas about the world, self-reflection and a never-ending quest to find our destined path/job/lover/life and I find this new stage scarier than when my chest first appeared.

Your previous institution has kicked your behind out of their pearly-gated, green-grass-growing 'safe zone', degree in hand, and now you're in the real world my friend.

While in school, you were either one of two things: a hippie-dream-following-liberal-arts-geek or a suit-wearing-shades-of-grey-right-or-wrong-practical-degree-follower. If you were the latter, you are probably behind a cubicle somewhere, enjoying the cash flow but hating yourself for pursuing that business degree. Let's leave you 'colors-within-the-lines' folk aside. I want to talk about my liberal arts, hippie brethren and sistren (and yes, that is the female equivalent).

If you decided to follow your dreams, I feel you. The job market sucks and the writers at Avenue Q hit the nail on the head with the question, "What can you do with a B.A. in English?" Nothing apparently. So you move back home to save money, see your dreams fluttering by when you couldn't afford your ivy-league dream schools and think three little letters to yourself:

WTF.

So four years of working your butt off momentarily flickers in your mind as a waste; since those As in your portfolio aren't looking like anything concrete. No worries you think. You always etched in 300 back-up plans in your monthly planner. But those red ink x's you scratch above your original plans bring you down.

Sure, maybe life did not quite plan out the way you had hoped, but if you are anything like me, the surprises are what it is about. Yeah puberty had the mystery of training bras and maxi pads, but the 20s has a lifetime of surprises to begin to unravel.

How to change your perception

To change your life you must first change the way you perceive the world. Putting a positive slant on the way you view things can change your life for the better and even alter the way you see the past. Your own perception is your reality and you can choose how you view the world.

But how?

♥ Start making the positives stand out more in your mind than the negatives. It's really easy to take things the wrong way, see things for way worse than they are, and ultimately make ourselves miserable. You're still going to see the negatives, but put less weight on them. You can choose what's more important.

♥ Before you go to bed, make a mental or physical list of everything wonderful that happened in your day. Everything you are thankful for. It's a great pick me up and a wonderful thing to think about in those thoughtful moments before drifting off. It's also great to do this if you're feeling down.

♥ View people as they truly are. Put yourself in the shoes of others and think about how they view the world and what might lead them to act the way they do. If someone's particularly positive and pleasant, think about why that is. If someone's hurtful and negative, think about what makes them that way. A little insightful thinking can drastically change the way you view situations, especially conflicts.

♥ Stop complaining and find a solution. Effort is much better spent fixing a problem than venting about it. If the solution isn't in your hands, separate yourself from the issue.

♥ Stressful thoughts should be banished. Creating more positive thoughts to outweigh the negative thoughts is extremely effective. Don't talk or think down to yourself.

♥ Enter new situations with a positive outlook. You're not psychic and you don't know how situations are going to be so enter them assuming that they're going to be just fine. Most of the things you worry about never even end up happening and if they do you'll get through it.

♥ Accept the fact that you can't control everything and just focus on how you can best react to situations instead of worrying about them occurring.

♥ Stop and smell the roses. Really. Don't rush through your days and forget to notice all the little things that make life beautiful.

♥ Recognize when to let the chips fall where they may and when to take control.

♥ Remind yourself how lucky you are for all the amazing things in your life.

♥ Learn to let things roll off. There are some excessive negatives in life that are unwanted and completely unnecessary. A lot of these negatives come from disgruntled individuals who don't know how to effectively get rid of stress & anger. Recognize that and only put weight on truths that should be addressed.

♥ Learn how to address negatives positively.

♥ Dedicate more time to learning and exploring instead of dwelling and venting.

♥ Recognize where things truly stand in order of importance.

♥ Learn to cherish the time you have with others instead of getting hung up on little negatives.

♥ Look at what you have instead of always pining for what you don't.

♥ Recognize the importance of beauty in the world in all of its forms.

♥ Don't be afraid to laugh at yourself sometimes.

♥ Banish self pity and adopt an "it could be worse" philosophy. It could, I promise.

♥ Don't get caught up in other people's perception. This is dangerously easy to do, but keep control of your own views.

♥ Spread the magic of positive perception. Remind others of the positives in negative situations.

A great coat and a heavy scarf are always nice items to have when the weather gets cold! While out in London, Sienna wears a plaid coat and carries a Tod's bag.

She was spotted at the airport wearing a scarf, Earnest Sewn jeans, a printed top, and a black jacket.

What sparkling ensembles! A Twenty8Twelve dress and Nicholas Kirkwood pumps look perfect on the Red Carpet at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards.

Sienna arrived at the CBS Studios in New York wearing a draped skirt and sequined top by Derek Lam.

Proving it's okay to wear the same thing twice, Sienna wears her simple, striped tank in different ways. She pairs it with a Twenty8Twelve skirt, Rupert Sanderson brogues, a Prada bag, and Benjamin Nicole sunglasses.

The same tank looks great with jeans and Havaianas flip-flops.

More stripes, because, well, who doesn't love stripes? While out in Beverly Hills, she wears a striped, long-sleeve Chanel tee, Miu Miu ankle boots, and carries an Yves Saint Laurent bag.

A striped tunic dress looks great with a Rock and Republic jacket, Ugg boots, and a Jimmy Choo bag.

Sienna wore this great printed Diane von Furstenberg dress to a G.I. Joe press conference in Korea.

While shopping in London, Sienna wears Twenty8Twelve skinny jeans, a printed jacket, and carries a Balenciaga bag.

She pairs a black jacket with a Twenty8Twelve top, and Russell & Bromley boots. For accessories, Sienna adds a Chanel cuff.

Sometimes your pants can either make or break an outfit. Bold, printed pants look fab with a Topshop lace top, Yves Saint Laurent bag, and Alexander Wang pumps.

Sienna wore these Twenty8Twelve wide leg pants and a plain, white tee while out in London.

Are you still holding onto that old, melted lipstick? Well, first of all THROW IT OUT and then read this post to find out the expiry dates on your makeup. And then find out what you really need. Forget all that old makeup you have taking up drawer space and get some new products for all the things you do!

If you're working with little kids………..try a cream eyeshadow- You want to look friendly to young children so get rid of dark shadows and use a light cream eyeshadow so you look fresh and wide awake! I wear nude cream eyeshadow when I mentor a child once a week, very low maintenance.

If you've got tons of extracurriculars………..try a cream blush- Cream blush gives you a natural flush that helps you look attentive, and makes your skin look more glowy then powder. Plus, it's long lasting!

If you're playing a sport………..try a tinted moisturizer- Makeup sweating off your face is not cool, so save yourself the effort and wear tinted moisturizer to even out your skin tone. Add a bit of mascara to look pretty, not sweaty.

If you're going out with friends………..try fun eyeliner- For a night out with friends, swap your boring brown eyeliner for a fun colour- I like purple. Way more cute and colourful.

If you're going to a celebration………..try red lip gloss- If you'll be at a carnival, celebration etc. try a red lip gloss to make your whole face glow! Gloss is way less harsh than lipstick and totally fun!

If you're having a relaxing Sunday………..try a multi purpose colour stick. A soft pink shade will work on your lips, cheeks, and eyes- perfect and fuss free!

If you've got a date………..try a lip stain for a healthy glow. Plus, studies show that guys like lips that look bare compared to the super slicked gloss look. Also, the guy won't have lipstick on his lips!

If you're going shopping………..try shades of beige. Nudes are natural and flattering, and they'll take you through a whole day of shopping. Apply a champagne coloured eyeshadow to the lid and finish with a shiny nude gloss.

If you're going to the movies………..try two toned eyeliner. Dab some plum gel eyeliner in the inner v and use a navy blue pencil on the outer or your top and bottom lashes. Blend into one another to make a serious statement.

If you're going to a part time job………..try contoured eyes- Pick up an eyeshadow palette from Revlon or N.Y.C to give yourself a sophisticated and sculpted look. Sweep the darker shades on outer corners and creases, and the lighter ones on inner corners and brow bones.
